White Water Rafting Duration and Prices

Durango white water rafting is a great pastime for people of all ages and experience levels. The versatility of this great outdoor adventure caters to your timeframe and needs, as well. White water adventures are typically available May through mid-October. This does, of course, depend on a few factors like water levels, rapid classifications, and weather.

White water rafting prices are organized by duration times and load-out occurs at multiple times during the day. The most common load-out times are between 8:30am and 5:30pm. You can choose between 2-hour, 4-hour, and 6-hour long trips to suit your needs. The pricing structure for these trips are as follows:

2 hours

Adult: $49

Youth (11 yrs. and younger): $39

2.5 hours

Adult: $59

Youth (11 yrs. and younger): $42

4.5 hours

Adult: $78

Youth (11 yrs. and younger): $68

Where you’ll go

The Lower Animas River is the perfect location for rafting trips. This length of the river features both Class II and Class III rapid classifications, which are perfect for beginner to intermediate experience levels. This area is also full of rich history and lore. During your journey down the river, your knowledgeable guide will fill you in on all the sights, including where the old ghost towns are located. You’ll pass well-known areas like Santa Rita, Sawmill, and the Ponderosa Rapids. You may even catch a glimpse of local wildlife, birds, and fish.

What you should bring

All of the safety equipment is provided, but you’ll need to bring some items of your own.

Clothing and shoes

Having the correct clothing and shoes is the most important way to stay comfortable during your white water rafting trip. The biggest mistake guests make is wearing cotton. This fabric doesn’t dry well and won’t keep you warm when you get wet. Try a moisture-wicking, flexible fabric instead and be sure to bring a change of clothes for after.

Shoes are also important when rafting. Avoid flip flops or sandals with no sturdy backing. River sandals or water shoes are best for keeping your toes safe and shoes on for the duration of the trip.

Here’s a quick list of some other items you should consider bringing:

  • Water bottle (so you don’t get dehydrated)
  • Sunblock (so you don’t get sunburned)
  • Snacks (so you don’t get ‘hangry’)
  • Waterproof bag (to keep phone, medications, and other important items safe)
