WHAT SHOULD I BRING RAFTING

White Water Rafting

It’s no secret that whitewater rafting is one of the best outdoor experiences in Durango. Whether you’re heading out with family or friends, it’s essential to be prepared before hitting the river. This ensures a fun (and safe) outdoor adventure with memories to last a lifetime!

There are many factors that determine what you should bring during your Durango white water rafting trip. Although your safety equipment is provided upfront, you’re responsible for the basics. Rain or shine, follow this guide to be prepared before whitewater rafting.

Wear the Right Clothes

It’s important to wear comfortable clothes that are easy to move and stretch in. Although you might not get soaked, getting at least a little damp is typical. Opt for a base layer that dries quickly. Swimsuit material or synthetics that are not cotton work best.

In fact, try to avoid cotton altogether. Although considered a comfortable fabric, cotton doesn’t dry easily and will keep you damp and cold. Synthetics, on the other hand, are a more versatile material that adapts better on the river. A long-sleeve t-shirt will also keep you protected from sun or chill water.

For even more comfortability, keep long hair tied back and avoid any bulky accessories. Keep long necklaces, hoop earrings, or expensive jewelry at home, as well.

In Cold Weather

The river is open during transition seasons, too. If you’re heading out on a chillier day, consider a raincoat, wetsuit, or other layers. The best types of fabrics for colder weather are neoprene, wool, and fleece. An extra change of clothes is also advised for after your trip.

Don’t Forget About Footwear

The right footwear is one of the most important items to bring for Durango whitewater rafting. You’ll need shoes that are protective, waterproof, and comfortable. Sandals are fine for warmer weather, but be sure they have sturdy straps and traction. The best footwear for rafting has extra stability and toe coverage. Avoid bringing flimsy flip flops or shoes that might slip off during bumpy rapids.

Other Items to Bring

Aside from correct clothing and footwear, there are a few other important items to bring with you. No matter the cloud coverage, sunscreen is a must! It can wash off during your time on the water, so be sure to reapply when needed. Wearing a hat and sunglasses for extra sun protection and shade is also an option. For sunglasses, consider using a strap so they don’t get lost.

Always pack a change of dry clothes for after your trip, especially if it’s a cool day. Bring a towel and an extra bag for your wet clothes, as well. Staying hydrated is also important when rafting. These trips can last hours, so it’s important to pack plenty of water and snacks.
